Window Tint Darkness Limits in Massachusetts

Compared to many other states, Massachusetts has stricter laws on window tint—at least when it comes to overall darkness. The following limits apply to cars, trucks and SUVs:

  • Windshields may be tinted (with non-reflective tint) on the top 6” or up to the manufacturer’s AS-1 line
  • All windows must allow at least 35% visible light transmission (VLT)

This means that your car’s windows must let at least 35% of light through.

Window Tint Reflection Limits in Massachusetts

When tinted windows are overly reflective, they may cause excessive glare that increases the risk of car accidents. In Massachusetts, window tint may not be any more than 35% reflective. This is a much higher limit than that of most states.

Other Tint Regulations in Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, if the rear window has any level of tint or is otherwise obstructed in some way, you must have dual side mirrors.

Penalties for Illegal Tint in Massachusetts

If a police officer conducts a traffic stop and notices that your tint is illegal, you might be ticketed and fined up to $250. If you repeatedly break the law, you may face a 90-day license suspension.

Massachusetts window tint laws don’t require you to have a sticker showing the level of your window tint. However, it may be wise to have one of these stickers—especially if your tint is close to the legal limit. If the officer can verify that your tint is legal, it may save you from having to fight a ticket.

Exemptions and Special Cases

Massachusetts window tint laws allow exceptions for those with a genuine medical condition. If your physician believes you must be allowed to tint your windows darker than 35% VLT, you may apply for a tinted glass waiver.
