As in all states, California requires residents to register vehicles used on the state’s public roads. The state makes this process relatively straightforward for current and new residents.
How to Register a Car in California
Most initial registrations require you to visit a California DMV service office. You may need to submit a title and prove your identity. You may also need to have your VIN verified. Renewals, on the other hand, are typically handled online.
Registering a New Car From a Dealership
If the dealer does not file the registration application for you, the DMV allows you to apply directly. For new cars, you only need to submit an application for registration. You must also turn over the title that was signed by the dealer.
Registering a Used Car From a Private Party
To obtain a registration, you must surrender the signed title. If the seller is not the owner listed on the title, you must also have a vehicle bill of sale in California. Buyers have ten days to transfer ownership by taking the title and bill of sale to the DMV. Additionally, the state’s traffic laws require the seller to notify the DMV of the sale within five days.
Registering an Out-of-State Vehicle in California
California refers to vehicles most recently registered in another state or country as “non-resident vehicles.” You have 20 days to register a non-resident vehicle after moving to the state.
