Suing social media platforms for addiction is possible by joining a multidistrict litigation (MDL) case. Learn more about the social media MDL for addiction.
What Is the Multidistrict Litigation Against Social Media Companies?
The social media MDL for addiction consolidated hundreds of personal injury lawsuits against some of the largest social media companies. The current MDL was filed in the Northern District of California.
The plaintiffs allege that social media companies knew of the risk to users (especially adolescents) of developing addictions when using the apps and sites and did nothing to remedy the problem or warn consumers.
Which Platforms and Companies Are Named in the Lawsuits?
The companies and platforms named in these personal injury claims include:
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram)
- Alphabet (YouTube)
- Snap Inc. (Snapchat)
- TikTok
- Discord Inc. (Discord)
These are the sites that are alleged to be most commonly involved in causing anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns.
Who Qualifies to File a Claim in the Consolidated Litigation?
You may be entitled to join the social media MDL for addiction if your child used any of the above platforms and developed a mental health disorder that impacted their quality of life or required them to receive treatment.
Your child could be eligible if they suffered physical harm as a result of developing an eating disorder or addiction. Additionally, you may be able to join the lawsuit if your child suffered an academic decline that impacted their future.
Current Status and Key Updates in the Legal Proceedings
As of early January 2026, Snapchat has settled numerous lawsuits, many of which are part of the MDL. Bellwether trials have been scheduled to take place throughout 2026.
On January 27, 2026, another defendant in a claim that is part of the MDL case settled. This time, TikTok is the company involved. Even though TikTok settled, this particular case may still continue because the plaintiff is suing Meta and other companies.
In February 2026, emails came out showing that the media companies knew the danger their sites posed and did nothing to warn consumers. The first Bellwether trial for Facebook cases was scheduled for June of this year. Other Bellwether trials began in February, however.
Potential Settlements and Compensation for Victims
It’s possible for many of these cases to settle. There are no available numbers yet, but the settlements can include coverage for medical expenses, like therapy for depression and anxiety. It’s also possible to receive compensation for your child’s loss of enjoyment of life.
